TMS stimulates neural activity in brain regions that are underactive. This underactivity is often seen in regions associated with mental illness and chronic pain.

For example, in individuals with depression or anxiety, decreased activity in a region of the brain called the “prefrontal cortex” will typically be seen in PET scan or functional MRI scans.  The prefrontal cortex plays an important role in mood regulation.
