What is tDCS?

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a form of neuromodulation that uses a low amplitude direct current to modulate brain activity. It has been used in research settings to alter excitability of cortical regions to study the effects of neuromodulation on behaviour. In clinical settings, tDCS has been used as a treatment for a variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions, including stroke, depression, and Parkinson’s Disease. More recently, tDCS has found use as a cognitive enhancement tool, to improve performance in tasks such as language learning and memory recall.


What are the advantages of tDCS?

The advantage of tDCS is its relative simplicity and portability. It requires no surgery, is non-invasive, and can be administered in a home setting. Furthermore, the effects of tDCS are reversible, making it a safe and viable option for short-term cognitive enhancement. TDCS has also been used to investigate the effects of neuromodulation on activity in other areas of the body, such as the spinal cord, suggesting that it may have therapeutic potential for conditions such as chronic pain.


How does tDCS work?

tDCS works by delivering a low strength, constant current directly to the scalp via electrodes. This current stimulates neurons in the underlying cortex, increasing or decreasing their excitability depending on the polarity of the current. TDCS can change the resting membrane potential of neurons, which can have a lasting effect on their activity. Studies have shown that tDCS can induce long-term potentiation or long-term depression at synapses, thereby modulating neural activity.
